Equestrian Event Venue Managers Speak Out On Strangles
Apr 21, 2021 Season 1 Episode 6
Redwings Horse Sanctuary

Strangles is the last thing a competitor wants to bring home to the yard from a horse show or event so what's it like running a successful venue for horse with the risk of  spreading this horrible disease?  We speak to two leading event venue  managers to tell us more about how they protect the enjoyment of horses at their centres.

Shirley Melling is the Yard Manager at Scotlands National Equestrian Centre (SNEC) and she tells us how she has become passionate about educating students, staff and visitors on hygiene and biosecurity.

Abigail Turnbull runs Richmond Equestrian Centre and talks about how their strangles outbreak in 2019 just days before a British Eventing event with over 800 entries inspired their leadership in raising biosecurity standards in the region.

Strangles Awareness Week is a campaign that aims to promote openness around the disease and make biosecurity a part of everyday horse care across the Equine Industry. The initiative is a collaborative effort between the British Horse Society, Intervacc, Keeping Britain’s Horses Healthy, Redwings Horse Sanctuary, Scotland’s Rural College’s Premium Assured Strangles Scheme (PASS), Surveillance of Equine Strangles (SES), The (Dick) Royal School of Veterinary Studies and World Horse Welfare and the podcast has been coordinated and produced by Redwings Horse Sanctuary.
